xAI raises $6 billion and announces supercomputer plan
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is closing in on a significant $6 billion funding round. This round is backed by prominent investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Tribe Capital, and is expected to value the company at $18 billion. Today, Musk announced that he will also dedicate efforts to build a supercomputer by fall 2025. This "gigafactory of compute" will feature 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, significantly enhancing its Grok chatbot capabilities.
Founded about a year ago, xAI aims to challenge leading AI entities like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Musk, who previously co-founded OpenAI, has positioned xAI as a contender in the generative AI space with its Grok chatbot, known for its witty and rebellious nature. The chatbot has been open-sourced and is available to X Premium+ subscribers on platforms like BitTorrent, Hugging Face, and GitHub.
Musk's vision for xAI is to create an AI that seeks truth and maintains a humorous edge, setting it apart from competitors he criticizes for being politically correct. This funding round will further xAI's mission to democratize AI technology and continue its development efforts.
