OpenAI is reportedly planning to announce an AI-powered search product on Monday, May 13th, just a day before Google's annual I/O conference. Reports suggest OpenAI's search will be integrated into ChatGPT and may utilize citations and data from Bing.
Google is clearly wary of the AI threat, with its search boss recently warning employees that the company needs to move quickly to counter new "gizmos" like AI search. OpenAI has allegedly been trying to poach Google employees to work on its search product. Other AI startups like Perplexity are also developing search capabilities powered by large language models.
An OpenAI search announcement on the eve of Google I/O would send a strong message, especially as ChatGPT has seen explosive growth. Google faces increasing competition in search as the AI race heats up, compounded by ongoing antitrust scrutiny over its search dominance.
