Welcome to Issue #21 of One Minute AI, your daily AI news companion. This issue discusses a new update from Apple.
Apple to power iOS 18 AI features with Apple Silicon
Apple is planning to use its M2 Ultra chip and a high-end version of the M4 chip in its data center servers to power some of the advanced AI features coming with iOS 18. While simple on-device AI capabilities like summarizing notifications will run on the iPhone itself, more sophisticated features like content generation, text summarization, and an LLM-powered Siri will be processed on Apple's servers running its custom silicon.
This move represents a shift from Apple's traditional focus on on-device processing but is driven by the recent AI hype. Apple has invested heavily to bolster its cloud AI capabilities over the past three years. However, the use of Apple silicon should still ensure user data privacy and security.
Apple is expected to unveil a range of new AI capabilities across its operating systems at WWDC 2024 in June, with iOS 18 said to be one of the biggest iPhone updates ever in terms of new AI-powered features and UI changes.
